I can't press play at the main screen because it keeps saying that there's an error. Every time I try to uninstall it, it says that there's and error code 5001. Can anyone please help me?

It won't uninstall? As far as I know there are two ways to go about this:

1. Go to safe mode by pressing F8. Reinstall the game at the same folder as the first time. Reboot, Safe Mode again. Then try uninstalling.

2. The brute force method - delete the folder, then use Regcleaner to remove the registry keys for the game.

When reporting this kind of problem it would be wise to list your system specs including: OS: Windows XP -- is it updated to SP2?; DirectX -- do you have DirectX 9.0c installed?; Motherboard Brand -- Latest BIOS?; CPU type and speed, Graphics Display Adapter make/model/amount of VRAM-- using the latest drivers?; Amount and type of System RAM; Amount of Hard Drive free space, etc. It's a complete shot in the dark to try to help you without any of this information.

I have a windows xp sony va10. I have directx 9. I have 3.00 GHZ. Intel pentium 4. Enough memory for the game. Just not the right kind of video card. I also went to my friends house to try the game on his PC, and the same thing happened. The game wouldn't play, and the game wouldn't uninstall. I knew the game wouldn't play on my PC because I don't have a video card yet. Getting it tommorow. I wasn't sure the game would work on his either because of his low quality video card. I'm just worried that it won't uninstall.

The fact that it won't uninstall is not such an uncommon thing but it is not related to your system, it has to do with the game itself. The upper two methods I already mentioned are it, when it comes to this problem .. get rid of it first.

It seems the game has issues of this kind, I have heard quite a few people complaining about this, so am not sure what to do about it. Haven't seen any solutions yet. But in any case first get rid of it, one way or another, then we can try again.

Complaining specifically that the game won't uninstall? Where were you reading this? First I've heard of it.

I just read about this problem in the thread problems from the start. I even went to run and typed in setup.exe. It still says the same thing. Error 5001. Does anyone know any good ways to remove it. I don't care how I have to do it.

No, I meant about the part where it won't start. I have five friends who play RPGs regularly, and we all got Oblivion on the same day. Two couldn't get it started, still can't, one got stopped very near the beginning with crashes, had to uninstall 3 times to get it running. Funnily enough, the other two, plus myself (not counting the CTDs) have had no issues. But there obviously is a problem of some sort, I've seen people on the ES forums with them as well.

*bump*

Bought the game today, and I've also got these problems.

first was my dvd player not reading the dvd - managed to get around that
then the install wizard didnt close after succesful installation - ctrl+alt+del
then i could not start the game. got a message telling me to reinstall
couldn't reinstall, get's the 5001 error OP had. - got around that by installing ontop of the installation again

Yet, I still cannot play the game. It just closes down the minute i press "Play" and i get the Microsoft error saying Oblivion encountered an error and had to shut down.

Have anyone found a way to fix this? I've checked the Bethesta forums, but haven't found any way there either.

when we try to play the game it says d3dx9_27.dll was not found and reinstalling the game will fix this problem, so we tried to uninstall the game and it says error 5001 or 1005 or something............

I had this problem when I first started. I got over that by repeated re-installations. ALOT of them. After about a week of playing, I noticed the game slowed down. Closed it and restarted it and now it loads only about 3/4s of the save game and freezes. Tried re-installing, nothing works. I never had this problem with my old PC so i'm guessing these problems only occur for certain PC configurations.

Update the Dx9

That's a problem with Direct3D, not Oblivion. The CD comes with a copy of Dx9c on it, but there have been several updates from Microsoft since then. Get one of those instead.

Year-old unanswered query here

When Yeltsu described the type of exit the game performed, no one answered him (her) at that time. Now that someone else is reopening the thread, and I answered that, there is the old item about the game closing to the desktop without any useful error message.

I seem to recall this was associated with trying to ignore the game's strict requirements on video device capability. Really old video cards predating the 3D revolution and the Intel IGP devices both cause the behavior. Neither are usable in the game, and the warning label made that quite clear.
