Weapon focus quarterstaff?

I like to play my wizard as 'pure' as possibly - not giving her any skills that aren't wizard-related, for example - and while the focus of the magic staffs is indeed the power they have, my wizard likes to use her staff to whomp anyone coming too close. So... my dilemma is as follows:
Equipping a magic staff ( Staff of Power, Staff of the Magi ) as primary weapon leaves me, when using ONLY a staff, with something that has very little actual power, and I don't like wasting spells on creatures like Goblins. However, if I equip another weapon ( longsword, dagger, etc ) as off-hand weapon, I always feel like any weapon focus I give her in that weapon is going to waste. I was actually curious enough to pause the game - if using a magic staff and an off-hand weapon, my wizard will indeed use BOTH in fight.
Does it actually make any sense to choose Weapon Focus: Quarterstaff? The base item of all 'wizard' staffs is 'magic staff' and I was never quite sure if it's the same as quarterstaff. If it isn't, I'd just be wasting skills when levelling up.
Edit: Forgot to add - I usually take one level of Ranger for Two-Weapon Fighting, but otherwise my wizard tends to be purely Wizard/Pale Master.
