crashing problem

hi, i have just re started PS:T after a ong time not playing, but have encountered a problem:
i have the two disc version of the game, and it crashes, as soon as i try and save or leave the first level of the mortuary it just exits the game completely
i have had a look around on various forums etc but havent even found anyone with the same problem let alone a solution!
so can anyone help me?
