I'm playing the museum quest and when I enter the basement there is a guard in front of the stairs. I can't get past him unseen, so the only option is to kill him, but I thought it was possible to fulfil this quest without killing.
There is only one way to the basement right? Or is there something I can do to lure the guard away. I also waited a while , but the guard doesn't move from his spot. If I kill him then other guards will also come to me.
Can someone please help me?

you can do it without killing. it doesn't matter if they see you as long as you don't kill them. so i usually run past then hide somewhere til they stop looking for me. if you have obfuscate this makes it a lot easier but it is possible to do it if you get out of their sight then quickly go into sneak mode and just try to stay out of their sight for a bit. you can also trance them or whatever if you have that skill. you can do anything you like to them as long as you don't actually kill them (you can even feed off them)

I"ve never understood the infatuation with not killing the guards. I went through vanilla without killing any guards and it was an exercise in exasperation and wasted time. If you have Obfuscate, you can pretty much breeze on through, but you can get through quite handily killing only four guards:
1) When you get to the bottom of the stairs to the basement, a patrolling guard happens by. Suicide.
2) The guard in the security monitoring station nearby. Suicide, and then turn off all the camera systems.
3) Near the beams, the guard in the monitoring station there. Suicide, and turn off the beams and alarms.
4) The guard that comes to investigate the death of 3. Suicide.
It's clear sailing apart from those particular four. You still get the bloodiest robbery in museum history, but hey! I'm a vampire. I can live with bloody.

i must admit, most of the time i just slaughter ever guard in the place lol. much more satisfying
but you can pretty much run past any guard in the place and just feed off the odd one every now and then to repair any damage you may have taken if you are really struggling and don't want to kill anyone.
