Stealth meter green yet I was still spotted

I have a sneak level of 4 and I was on the second floor of the medical clinic, and hid in the shadows. The meter was green and said "zero", yet even though I was in the shadows on the far side of the room, the guard saw me all the way across from the other side. How could this be? Is it just unique to that particular guard? It's the first time I've tried sneaking. And I can't see how possibly he could have seen me given my position.

I'm just wondering if my game is bugged or not. I installed both the official 1.2 patch and the unofficial 1.8 patch.

This is not necessarily your problem. There are some levels and/or tasks that don't allow you to sneak, or severely limit your ability to sneak. The rule may simply be that you can't sneak past the guard. Just kill him.

I thought that's what it might be, which is why I asked. I figure if other people tried and failed then it's probably just related to that specific mission.

I've never managed to sneak past him, except wth obfuscate. So I imagine it is deliberate (the fact there is dialogue might suppor that). I've definitely had the problem of being in the clear according to my meter, but still being seen.

Frustrating really, as I'd like to be able to bloodbuff, pick a lock or two and then use him to top myself back up. I've just never been able to manage it without being spotted.

Now that you mention it, that's probably precisely why you can't sneak past him - so you're forced to leave a little low on blood.

Elizabeth Dane - on the way out - they guy just stands there blocking the corridor. I would prefer to get out undetected but you can't help bumping into him and he raises a "hue and cry" for others, including the bent copper, to start shooting at you.

I haven't found a way to get by so I just barge into him and run for the railing.

There is a way to avoid this guy.
Spoiler:
When you're in the control room you do normally two things on the computer: activate the deck cameras and open the doors. Once you used the cameras to see the sarcophagus, you leave, head down the stairs and go into the room there to pick up the document you need for Lacroix. Then you head back up the stairs (so don't exit via the door you entered) and take the door right in front of you and then follow the corridor to the right and you'll end up at a door close to the stairs that lead to the railing. So no police between you and your boat.

I don't recall needing bloodbuff up there, the place is littered with keys and terminals to open doors and vaults.

I think the computer for the controlled substances safe (and the room?) is after the second door from the entrance (on your right hand, the centre of the floor), the room is called CIS (I think), it opens with the guard's key. The password for the vault can be obtained by reading Malcom's email, if your hacking skill is too low. But I'm not entirely sure, my last chars had reasonable lockpicking skills.

the prescription safe is in a different room to the controlled substances safe and is not opened by the computer and i have never found a key for it and if i recall correctly it needs a skill of 3 or 4 or something to open and sometimes at that point in hte game i only have lockpicking of 1 or 2 as i just use blood buff to get it up to 5 or 6 when i need to.

My bad, I suppose I mixed up these two.

Using Dementation

I found another way around the clinic guard:
If you have sufficient dementation, you can tell him you're a key ring, and he'll give you his key and you become invisible to him. Do your stuff and feed on the way out. You needn't even kill him.

I encountered the same problem on another part of the game, and only after the 1.8 patch was installed. I have a 6 sneak, and wouldn't have been caught anyway, but it was still a little weird to stand right next to someone and have my meter at 0. That could be a problem.

Anyway- I suspected it was the patch, since it's only happened since installing. (Last time I got spotted with my meter at like 10, as a Nossie with a 7 sneak!)
