The will Robes apparently protect you from magic better than the other types of armor you would get that early in the game. (I'm not sure if the Plate mail's defense would make up for that) I'm speaking out of classic Fable not TLC, so it may depend.

It's also about roleplaying, as in, you in a real situation, a weak mage isn't going to wear heavy plate around.
If I remember correctly, it mentions something like it helping magic users... but I'm not too sure about that.

it would make more sense if the mage clothes had attributes like in diablo, otherwise why would you wear a dress or robe that has like 200 defense when you can wear the plate armor. so far ive noticed that you dont need a lot of strength to wear the plate armor. i got mine at physique level 4 i think.

Spoiler
Well also depends on where you are at and what to wear. Wearing the Bright Will Users outfit will more likely get people liking you then wearing say full suit of Dark Plate. Plus add to your Attractiveness and Alignment. Even warrior types would prefer wearing something with less weight then plate while drinking beer in the pub and chatting with the ladies.

It also affects your name title as, for example "Reaper the mage, or the warrior"
Depends what weapons and clothes you use

I was under the impression that your experience level in each area affected your "class". I have a character with no guile, simply all physical and magical experience and he is a "Spellwarrior". I also have another char with full guile leveled up and he is a "Rogue".

My char's full title is:
A Legendary Spellwarrior called Paladin
"legendary" is determined by your renown level
"spellwarrior" is determined by what skills you have leveled up
"paladin" is determined by the title you purchased or that you earned at a temple

Paladin, that u get from the temple of Avo
Necromancer, that u get from the temple of Skorm
"spellwarrior" is determined by what skills you have leveled up
It is determined about how you fight. That means you kill with melee and magic. I have levelled up all strength, and minimal will, however because I only used will, it made it say "Will User".
