not that you would want to pick one in favor of something more powerful, but what's the best specialty mage class?

Probably Conjurer. Not because conjuration spells are that good but because you can easily do without the divination spells. Use high lore or Glasses of Identification or pay for identification in a shop. As for illusions theives can detect those, or you could use the cleric/paladin spell True Sight.

Yup, Conjurer, only Wizard Eye, True Sight and Identify are decent Div spells...

Yeah Conjurer.
For identification you get "identification glasses" and a cleric can cast "True Sight", too.

Like when you use spells in your specialty school, you get a little better affects (longer duration, faster cast time, etc.).
In other words, you would have more incentive to mainly use the spells in your school........it would make them each more distinctive.</STRONG>
I agree with you. That's why I invented the first Firewizard of Faerun, Wilfred Wildfire. He was an Invoker who could only learn evocation spells + all spells relating to fire (such as Burning Hands and summon Fire Elemental). I also gave him the abilty to once a day turn into a Fire Salamander, to compensate a bit for the smaller range of spells. He was great fun and also very specialized.

It's not much better in 3ed PnP. A specialist mage can only cast extra spells from her chosen school of specialisation.

Well, that's good, isn't it? Only makes sense that you can do more of what you specialized in...

"Look, everybody! I'm a Conjurer. I get more Skull Traps, Project Images and Stoneskins. See?" :D
