I went through the game recently and was unable to complete the romance side-quest w/ Carth. Now, I was pretty sure that I hit all the conversation points, but ultimately, nothing came of it. My first thought was that I'd actually missed something, then I remembered the Charisma attribute (mine was a measly 10 w/ no modifier , I opted to let my persuasion do the talking).
Although this stat represents how much people like you in the game, does it also affect the outcome of a side-quest like this?

absolutely not. i had a pretty low charisma, too, but was able to complete carth's romance quest. chances are u missed something, or said a wrong thing. some1 else should know what im talkin about, but there is a thread out there that has a link to a site that tells u what conversations u should hit before obtaining the next star map 'n such. *does a search*a-ha! and here's the pg...

Another thing crossed my mind. Is it possible for a standard side-quest to derail the romance plot? After I initated his messenger quest, Carth wouldn't talk about anything other than his son.

Carth's side quest should not stop the romance. I'm pretty sure that the romance with Carth has a specific point where you... get the goods. Unlike Bastila's Romance where you just have to be in the Ebon Hawk, Carth's romantic climax happens on a specific planet at a specific time (at least I'm pretty sure it does). I haven't ever played the whole game through as a girl, and I find Carth to be rather annoying and wouldn't dream of romancing him anyway, so I don't know how accurate my info is, it comes from this web site though and makes sense to me:

Since I have no idea where you are in the game or whether or not you've beaten it and thus can't have the ending spoiled, you'll have to highlight for the answer, but if you don't want ending spoilers, just know that the Dustil thing doesn't screw up the romance (according to the info I found it should actually help):
Once you are on the unknown planet and have beaten Bastila on top of the temple (assuming you're LS)you should get a chance to talk to Carth on the beach and that is where the romance subplot is finished. I guess listening to Mission's comments (or maybe talking to her right afterwards) is pretty funny. If you go DS, you kill most of your friends (Jolee, Juhani, Mission, and possibly Zaalbar) and Carth runs off swearing to save you from yourself. Once you beat Malak Carth will show up to turn you back, but I think your only option is to kill him.

Just out of curiosity (man, I must really like Carth to try this hard to hook up w/ him) how can you have him with you at Summit if the game automatically makes you take the others? Is there a way to switch him into your party before you enter?

Assuming that the romance thing happens on the Unknown planet (like I said, I've never done it), I believe that it happens after you come back from the summit (or possibly before). You can't take anyone but Juhani and Jolee with you into the temple.

I beg to differ with what's been said before. The Dustil mission sort of made my romance mission crack. According to yoyopogo's link, you get the quest after conversation #7. At the time I got it, I was looking for my third Star Map, and was planning to do Korriban last (therefore fifth Star Map). Since Carth wouldn't talk about anything other than the Dustil quest, I picked up the third and fourth Star Map before doing the Korriban quest, (and not having any conversations with Carth) thus ending the romance subplot (if you don't reach conversation #9 before picking up the fourth Star Map, it's over).

I hope what I've just said has made some sense. I don't exactly know what you meant with your question, but this is my side of the story.

P.S. I don't mean to say any side-quest can derail the course of the subplot. I was just pointing out a certain scenario in which a certain side-quest can indeed mess up the subplot, thus bringing it to a premature end.

Suicide Girl, you and I seem to have had the same problem. Right after I started Carth's side-quest the guy was obsessed with getting his son (which of course is understandable), he wouldn't talk about anything else. I finished the game a while ago, but this has been bugging me ever since. Maybe we both missed something, or maybe there's bug in our individual copies (i hope not). Maybe the romance plot can be stopped by a side-quest and we just happened to find out now.

I guess I'll just have to hold off Carth's quest as long as possible, if not ignore completely.

I don't think you have to ignore it, kesi, just try to make Korriban your third or fourth Star Map planet. In that case, you'll be able to do Carth's side quest parallel with the main mission, and not lose the romance subplot. Just make sure you have conversation #9 with Carth after finishing the Dustil quest (#7) and before getting the fourth Star Map.

At least I hope it should work that way. I haven't really tried it yet, since this topic is the first real shred of proof I haven't gone all the way with the subplot, and I haven't had time to replay the game yet. But theoretically, I guess if you do everything it says in yoyopogo's link and not have Korriban as the last planet and finish Carth's side quest before getting the fouth Star Map-

Ok, I'm starting to stray... You get the picture.

Resumé: Do everything nice and proper, in accordance with yoyopogo's link, blah blah... Talk to Carth (conversation #7) any time before getting the third Star Map. Get off the Ebon Hawk (with him) and you'll meet the bloke who starts off the Dustil quest. Go to Korriban (make Korriban your fourth planet, e.g. Dantooine, Tattooine, Kashyyyk, Korriban, Manaan), solve the side quest, talk to Carth twice (conversations #8 & #9), pick up the Korriban Star Map (fourth Star Map), and continue as instructed in the site yoyopogo mentioned. And that way, you won't miss out on anything, and everybody can be united as one big happy family!! Ok, I know I'm ranting now...

EDIT: I cut it a little fine there... You can make Korriban your third Star Map planet. You just have to trigger the side quest before actually picking up the third Star Map. Oh what the hell, you know what I'm trying to say here!! *sigh* You can have both the side quest and the romance subplot. You just need to plan a bit, in order to finish the Korriban side quest before getting the fourth Star Map, and also hit #9 before getting the aforementioned Map.
