I really just want a gnome ftr/thf to be used as a tank. I have the sneak attacks enabled, so I need to know what the best melee weapon for these kind of attacks it.

AFAIK, any melee weapon (it may also apply to ranged) the F/T can equip can be used in a sneak attack. Long swords can be pretty good, but it's probably going to depend on the luck of random drops on which weapon is best to use.

Is there a difference about which weapons you can use regarding sneak attack and backstabbing?

Because backstabbing only works with melee weapons a pure thief can equip, i.e. longsword, club, shortsword, scimitar, quarterstaff and dagger.

No difference in weapons between backstab and sneak attack; the only weapons that can be used are the ones available to a single-class thief - e.g. a fighter/thief has to abide by the weapon restrictions of a thief if you want to backstab/sneak attack. Axes, bastard swords, and any two-handed weapons except staves cannot be used in a "thiefly" way.

You can't really go wrong with any small-to-medium edged weapon proficiency. Maybe start with longsword and add dagger (after getting your two points in longbow or crossbow, and hopefully at least one PP in a blunt weapon).

There are two weapons you can use fairly well as a fighter/thief. One is the +2 Flaming Longsword which adds fire damage to attacks in Dragon's Eye. Another is the +2 poison dagger you get in Dragon's Eye. I don't recall seeing many swords or daggers that were above +2, so your thief is limited in being able to deal lots of sneak attack damage.
