In doing a search for information about charms, I found a comment about "avoiding the red ones". I couldn't find anything else that said why; could someone please enlighten me.

Simply that they have very little result. Since that's the case, if you equip them, you can't remove them, and they take up a slot in an item that should go to something more worthy.
Personally, I only equip silver or gold charms. The rest I sell. But that's up to you.
