save up some money to buy the most expensive item you can, go to the shadow thieves guild, sell it to the merchant, then use make your thief drink several master thievery potions, and proceed to steal that same item back and resell it. repeat this over and over until you have as much money as you want

I was wondering about that. Anything in particular? A man could have a hell of a good time in Athkatla with 40K.

By the time you've done about 4 of the quests outside of the big A you should have (after selling unwanted magic items) about 100K anyways.

I have noticed that you naturally acquire a lot of gold over the course of the game. I for one usually sell the gems and lesser magic items for some pretty big bucks. If you haven't already, invest in the scroll case and gem bag. You'd be surprised at what you accumulate.

That's why 'penalties' are never what they should be. 10K to find out where imoen is? What a rip off. Having said that, there's not much you could buy for 10K. I mean, what could the shadowthieves get for that? A couple of shorsword +1's. Great! That'd help against the vampires.

Additionally, I've heard the hookers on Brynlaw do a roaring trade, male and female.

A great way to get money is to pull breaking and entering. In the Bridge area, there are two noble estates that net you a combined 4000 gp. This takes time and effort, as well as a good thief, but its in my opinion more honorable (well, Im a thief) then the "trick the merchant" way

something i noticed: after you emerge from the underdark and go back to the adventurer's mart in waukeen's promenade, you can of course ask to see ribald's "special wares" for an entrance fee of 50 gp. what surprised me, though, was that while browsing his special wares, you can sell your stuff for significantly higher prices. i think he was paying me 55 GP per composite bow, and of course you can sell magical items for really good money. that is, if you can wáit till chapter 6.

I earn't 370,000gp in 15 minutes.

I found lots of bugs with stores that contain infinite items (such as I now have purchased 14 Rings of Air Control from Ribald). (can't steal from ribald) - inproved invisibility. Image

There is some 7th level spell which bernard sells (hard to steal, takes to long)

and before you kill off Mae'var, talk to Goreth

He sells (forth item down, handy position) a Mace +2. This item is unlimited. He is also VERY easy to steal from. Clean out yoshimo's inventory, and steal 16 of them at a time. Sell them all. they sell for 500gp each. ie 8000 gp. I went to the fridge, got a beer, came back, and did this for 15 minutes. I now have as much gold as I do experience points. PS - This was also my third quest after I got out of irenicus' dungeon, so now I am rich and only a new character. Image
PS - Yoshimo has a pickpocket of 65 in my case. Buy the eight potions that Goreth has, drink three. It raises you to 185 pickpocket.
Remember to do this BEFORE you take the documents back to Bloodscalp.

@Socrates123: Waste of effort. Show a little patience. When you finish the game you will have more than 100K of useles gp (my experience: almost 200K). If you want money NOW then visit:
1. Guarded Compound - lot of expensive stuff. Some of it is useful for you, most of it you can sell immediately. I recommend to begin here after emerging from the Irenicus' dungeon.
2. The Sewers, Hangard & Co. - the same, even if not so rich as the Guarded Compound. (My next destination after the Guarded Compound.)
3. de'Arnise Keep - money, items and a reward 10670 gp.
4. Mae'Var's Guild - money and a reward about 10000 gp.
As far as my experience is concerned, you can collect more tham 80K of gp in less than 15 days of game time.

I was a shopaholic and I had to confessed that when I started this game, I tricked the merchant in order to get more money. I made 400,000gp in 15 minutes, but I ran out of money by chapter 6. So I made another 500,000gp in 5 minutes, with 5 items.

I think they are Robe of Venca, Plate of Baldurian, Staff of Magi, Defender of Easthaven and something else. Each load got me ~42k! So I say that's the fastest way to make 40k Image

I think Radek's right. Basically, using a bug (or at least, non-optimized code) to gain as much GP as possible from stealing/selling takes the fun out of the game. There are areas where, even in the 2nd chapter, you can still make a ton of cash, and grab some of the best items around.

Well, it, of course, is using an exploit, but you can make amount of money large enough in Adv.Mart even not leaving the Promenade. You should have enough money to buy some Ring of Animal Friendship if not Ring of Air Control after leaving the dungeon. Both have unlimited stock. The method is like as with Mace+2, Ring of Air Control even costs more. You order 16, but, before you pay, you sell one item (not matter what) and the cost of 16 falls to cost of one. The problem is (at least so it has been for me) it anyway takes all your money no matter how much you have.
Now, when you have 16 rings, leave in backpack the number of them necessary to foot the bill for one ring and store other where you can, even of the ground. Sell all but one, book another 16, sell the last you have and purchase 16 for cost of one. Repeat as far you wish. At the end sell what you have stored at not going to keep Image

Though i would advice not to be too rich, it might cause problems when you meet with Bodhi Image So, IMHO, you should make no much more money as you would spend in the Mart and the Promenade, then, after the first visit to the Cooper inn, add the amount you need there (you would wish it if you have the premium pack).
Of course, it might easy the first steps in the game and might (should) counted as a cheat, so decision is yours. But so you might make the taw good enough and be a bit stronger. In latter chapters you shall have enough money and it will not be a key factor, anyway.

IMHO, the limited cash in the beginning is supposed to prevent you to to poke your nose too far too early. The problem is you see cool items you might desire and you never know if you could get money enough to foot the bill both for equipment and for the quest. I'm sorry for it is not BG I where with some patience you could collect any amount of cash traveling around known areas and might have some experience on top. BTW, i have a feeling the developers are mostly to restrict the limits of experience to prevent the party to be too powerful beforehand. Well, i liked BG I better in this aspect.

BTW, the other thing i'm complaining about is developers' illusion they might guess what heroes we would wish. The variety of possible companions in BG I has been more wider and far more wiser And, for example, seemingly they have had a belief that Minisc with Boo should be most popular NPC... I wouldn't say i cannot endure him, though i find him boring if not annoying. However, never have been sure, but sometimes have a feeling they are laughing on us Image

Well, long and off-topic ... overflow of the heart Image ... but the last Image ...
In fact all that is an illusion. I do not believe that using exploit here is something different from using the Shadowkeeper, it only makes an illusion of it Image

Best wishes,
L.

Too much NPC dialog, Loredweller, and too many NPC-based quests. In BG1, you didn't really have to worry about either very much. In BG2, the characters really come alive. But if you want more NPCs, I understand both the official and unofficial expansion packs will 'em to the mix.

Well, if avoiding bugs, there are much more interaction with some NPC, mostly for romance part, though. But we are more tied to storyline, for one thing, and there is lack of choices anyway. You have one true thief for first part of game and none for the rest. You have one true mage for hire, and he is evil! Wow, i have already killed him in BG I, how i can keep him in my party! (I suspect he is one more of developers' favorite besides Minisc and Boo). Let us compare it with BG I, there were more to pick up, IMHO.

The dialog choices aren't too rich and do not allow very large space for role feeling, too. "Yes", "No", "Shut up!" in most cases. Since it is also my professional playground, too, i understand the problems with scripting and programing and can see the consequences, but nevertheless ... well, it's area of a limited wish, though Image Other games sin at it all the same.

The second, we are more restricted. We have plenty of quests leading us to one or another area. I feel some sorrow for BG I or even BaK, where i might wander almost all the world almost the every chapter for experience and surprises, and the solution of quests hadn't been always laying on the surface. I see so far rare quest in BG II needing some brain, if i'm recalling the riddle chests in BaK (or, say, finding the way to escape from the North). The early Ultima had had some of nice intelligence quests, too. Riddles or puzzles in BG are rather easy, if you know a bit about Forgotten Realms, and they are rare anyway. The quests mostly are to find something not so hard to locate or kill somebody not so hard to figure out.
Just my 2g, and i'm really enjoying the game Image Always loved games with character development within. Just waiting my game of dream coming down. May the Neverwinter be such, who knows.
