what is 'd'

what does 'd' mean for e.g. in a hit die of d10 or a weapon's damage ability of 2d6.

d is a die/dice (never know the prober usage of them words).
So basically "d" infront of something means a dice of that many sides.
d6 = dice with 6 sides, giving possible numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
I belive this is also explained in the manual.

"Die" is singular; "dice" is plural.
@crazy:
d10 means a ten-sided die = a random number between 1 and 10.
2d6 means two six-sided dice = a random number between 2 and 12 with an average value of 7.
