Do they actually have a purpose - i.e. if you have all of the set, do they become really powerful - as they are really crappy on their own and useless weight to carry around otherwise.

At least one I know of becomes more powerful, but powerful is relative. If you find individual pieces with plenty of holders for enchanted stones and a nice array of spells, I'd just as soon go with the latter.

I thought that the sets in Beyond Divinty were broken :( (Unless it has been corrected in a patch I haven't heard about)

In Divine Divinity the Dragon set is pretty good from what I remember.
