What is Defensive Casting Mode?

When you are using a sorceror(or perhaps any spell caster) you have the option of using "Defensive Casting Mode" during combat. Everytime you cast a spell, there is a concentration check. If you fail the check, the spell fails.

What does this Defensive Casting Mode do? I've searched the manual and online thread without an answer.

when you are in combat, everytime you cast a spell you provoke an attack of oppurtunity. To prevent this, you enter defensive casting, and you dont provoke AOO. This requieres a concentration check DC 15+spell level each time you cast a spell

I guess this mode becomes useless once you acquire the Improved Combat Casting Feat

jepp! but that is an epic feat! and it takes some time to get there, so i would recommend combat-casting as a starting feat(a bit off topic...)

Every spellcaster starts with that if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think so, it can be taken to provide a concentration bonus in combat for spell-casting. +4 or something like that IIRC.

You're right... I was thinking about defensive casting. :) Then lets correct this: nobody get combat casting as a special ability. You have to choose it.
