halasters magnifying glass ?

would any body be able to tell me what it's for, i can't for the life of me find a purpose for it
Apparently it is for "burning" the insect-creatures (Fomarians or something similar) you find.
But that is what I've picked up from people at this board - I've never tried it myself.
