Stamina Problem?

I just started playing the game.
After killing the guard and clearing out the first 3 cells, my game has gone very dark and my stamina will not regenerate anymore.
Since I have no food, I can't rest.
Is this a bug, or did I do something wrong?
Any help you can provide would again be appreciated.
