Jamie Bond? The New 007 ?

Last weekend I ended up having to take a couple of longish (an hour and 35 minutes each way) ferry trips. While the trip is beautiful, when you've done it many, many times.. it is *really* boring.

Since the book I had brought along was seriously depressing me I rifled through the paper recycling and discovered a two-year-old copy of "Us Magazine." My God, what a turgid little rag.. But anyway, amidst tales of Michael Jackson's debauchery I noticed a clip from one actress who stated that she figured the next James Bond should be female.

Since I have seen a number of Bond films recently (my son likes them), this really made me pause. I don't know, I'm not sure I can see it.

Certainly, I can imagine a sophisticated, intelligent and attractive female agent, with a coterie of young studs in her wake, playing a Bond type of role.. but it wouldn't be "James Bond." It would be something different all together.

So, can anybody see a woman playing Bond?

Errr, quite simply: NO!

Bond is a man; our sex identifies itself with him. He's a ladies man, the ultimate spy. In short, he's the epitome of what most boys would ever want to be, especially in their earlier years. Changing to a woman would totally throw that picture around.
Mind though, that this is the opinion of someone who wasn't even a big fan of Bond and who surely missed a movie or two.

A female spin-off of the series would probably sell, but I'd have to say they should make up a plot for it, possibly bonds daughter or something you know? Or even something completely unrelated. An unrelated series about a female spymaster type person of sorts might do quite well, both with men having an attractive female in the movie, and women liking a strong female lead character. I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet honestly, but then again there have been movies with something like that theme before.

They have speculated for ages over a "new and improved" Bond, and I hardly see the point. Bond is exceptionally white, british and aristocratic. Try anything else, and it ain't Bond anymore. Machineguns in tuxedos and dry martinis, shaken, not stirred. Deadpan humour where people can think "oh my gawds, he's so british!" He's a national symbol, and should remain that way. They tried to come up with a spin-off movie with Halle Berry as Jinx, but what's the point when you have Alias on the telly?

And Lara Croft has NOTHING to do with Bond, but was an incredibly good idea on a different and modern take on Indiana Jones that 200 Hollywood scriptwriters and two really bad directors managed to destroy. It remains one of my main pet peeves, so please don't get me started. ;)

I'm not saying it's the same as James Bond, I'm only pointing out that there is a movie with a female character in the main role, who has her fair share of gadgets and machinery as well.

God, it's the women rights movement all over again. :D
Please, anyone remember She-man? Spiderwoman? Batgirl? Superwoman? and lets not forget She-hulk!? :o

If women get a female JB I demand male Charlies Angels! But in a non-sexist way, we are not peaces of meat! :p

So I have to agree with Sytze, to each his/her own. Women have their characters and so have men. Let's not create a hybrid version that will shock the world with it's awfullness.

Well, I do believe Rob has taken the words right outta my mouth. I was going to use a simliar analigy, but his is much better.

He's right, we have our characters, and women have theirs. Let's see... there's... Lara Croft... Elektra... Catwoman... uhh... LET ME THINK!

No way. Get your own superhero. He is ours and let it stay that way. To hell with political correctness. Some things are better off without it.

My female friends would tear me apart for saying all of that to them about movies....must be a foreign thing.

I agree, a female Bond very well could break the series unless done with an extremely good plot. Regardless, of what many people actually want, I think it would sell, maybe not more than the first movie if it wasn't well done, but I think an attempt would sell enough to make money.

lol! As several people have suggested, James Bond is the ultimate male role model, the kind of character many guys fantasize about becoming. And really, it's no surprise. He is the big hero who gets to visit exotic locations, play with all kinds of gadgets, seduce at least three beautiful women per movie... drives a stylish, fast car (until he destroys it anyway :D ).

It is the old "fast women, fast cars cars and...... " :p

I think a movie with a female agent that had similar elements to 007 would sell very well, just as long as it was not intended as a replacement for Bond himself.

If you let a woman have that similar elements as 007 in a movie, people will draw that line between her and the familiar James Bond (even though he's been played by multiple actors).
So people will just call it a James Bond rip-off in that case.

I heard of this before, and a while ago to. Personaly I dont think it would work. When anyone thinks of Bond, regardless of which actor comes to mind we get a mans image. To pull off a chick flick type Bond you would have to completly seperate then the 007 title. Perhaps a future bond type movie where I dunno, Sean Connery plays a "retired" bond handing out the missions to some hot chick he still plows on weekends!

No friggin way. :p Look get another agent different story line, fine with me. Do not replace my male role model :D (sadly my fear of hugs affects my ability to mimick my role model :p )

I'm not against a similar story....but that can NOT happen to the Bond storyline. I think an epic female spy could make for a good story, but it should not infringe on this series. Bond is a guy, needs to stay that way.

It would only work if she was the daughter of James, going to kill him for leaving his mother. And she would definitly have to be very sexy and a lesbian with the same exact characteristics. And in the end bond kills her.

NO way

Bond has been around for a long time so it wouldn't make sense to all of a sudden make Bond a woman. I would agree with adding a female to help Bond with some of the missions but not bond himself a woman. To me making Bond a woman is like making Masterchief a woman.
