Help needed! (HotU, chapter 3, Wastes of Cania)

I cannot deafeat the guardian in wastes of cania. I can get him near death by casting harm and my party can give him huge amount of damage per round in combat. My party (me (23lvl cleric/1lvl druid), aribeth, deekin, summoned elder air elemental and my familiar dire wolf) don't get any damage on themselves no matter how long we'd beat him.

I read from the walkthrough guide
"1 - PLANAR GATE
When you leave the temple wearing the Sleeping Man’s ring a door will appear. Use it to get to the Wastes of Cania. Your first task will be to defeat a demon. The tricky part about this fight is that you will keep polymorphing unexpectedly."

The problem might be here, because I don't polymorph. Is there a bug in the game or smth like that? I have the latest patch.

Edit:Thanks, but it didn't work. I reloaded the game from the beginning of chapter 3 and the problem was there again. I guess my game is over, because I can't go forward

That does sound like a bug, yes, as you suspect yourself - that you can't kill the demon before being polymorphed a few times.
Unfortunally - I haven't really got many ideas as to how to work around it seeing as it is a rather critical place.

Are you fighting near the blocked passage behind the demon (some rocks block the path) - and if not try fighting near that.
Otherwise - all I can advice is to re-load
