Problem sliding the bar in Kuei-Jin area

Ok, I guess I've chosen the ending for 'No Allegiance', but I'm not quite sure.
Anyway, the problem is in this large room with doble doors and water running on wheels, but I can't manage to slide that piece of wood away to unlock the door. The picture for doing that comes up in the bottom of the screen, but pressing 'e' just doesn't work. I've tried holding 'e' and strafing in the direction I want to pull it, but nothing happens.
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?
Any help would really be appreciated, since I'm in the final areas of this game. I just want to finish it,uninstall it, and get on with my life.
