Two different harddrives

I have a SATA installed at the moment and I was wondering if I could still use my old IDE harddrive. The IDE is a 40gig and I had it installed but it would not read it at all.

If you know how to do it, please can you tell me what to do if you do know of any way to get it to work together. If you are looking for my specs, they are on the only other thread that I have posted.

I'm not that much into hardware and settings anymore so I don't know if SATA and IDE can "co-exist" - but have you remembered to use Master/Slave settings in BIOS and possible jumpers on the harddrives.

Yes I have, but the SATA does not have the ability to be changed to master or slave. Yes, I have looked in my BIOS.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have seen some references to people claiming to be able to run SATA and IDE harddrives at the same time. But I can't tell what is the problem.

Setting master/slave drivers require two steps IIRC, changing the jumper AND doing the job on the mobo. If your jumper is set to master, it will not work when set as slave drive.

SATA now works properly, but I blew my 40 gig and my motherboard. Had to get the board replaced, only to have a computer technician blow it again 3 hours before a large lan in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

I did not have a good day and I think that was my fourth or fifth motherboard in a period of 2 years.

All seems to be working perfectly now, so that is fine.
