Short Sword of Backstabbing

Hi. I am soloing as a swashbuckler. I assassinated Mae'Var, and went to Renal Bloodscalp to claim my reward. He gives me 10500 gold but no sword! Any reason for that?

When you clean out Mae'Var's Guild as a Thief,Renal offers you to keep it (as a Stronghold),but you get no sword
Maybe if you refused the guild he might give you the sword,but I never tried this.Heck,this may be a bug as well so maybe we should ask Kevin D. to check it out?

Aah, I hadn't thought of trying that. You're correct, when I refused the guild he offered me the sword. Oh well...

I did wonder about this. It's very strange. If you aren't a thief, you get a great thief sword. If you are, you don't. It made no sense to me...it would make sense if you got the sword regardless of your protagonists' class, and also got the stronghold and gold reward if you were a thief.
I was going to ask Dave G. in the BlackIsle forum about this, but I see from the reply that if you turn down the guild, you get the sword instead... there's the tradeoff.

Yes,this is kinda strange,but take the mage stronghold for example.No matter if the mage turns down or takes the Planar Sphere for himself,either way he gets Lavok's Ring of Acuity.And if he takes the stronghold he,can even get the Ring of Wizardry and other nice wizard stuff.The Thief Stronghold offers only a few measly quests and some cash so I think it would not be unfair if thieves could get the sword anyway.
