Not realy a problem, but though why not post it here, you'll never know if someone can help.
I sometimes want to save a videofile (trailers etc.) that are opened in Mediaplayer/Quicktime when i click a link on a site.

On some sites you can rightclick the link and save the file.
But sometimes you just save the URL.

Is it possible do save these movies, and if so how?

Saving

You must download to be able to save. Sounds like some sites do download and other don't. I suspect the ones that don't want to prevent loss of control of the picture. Try opening the Edit tab and selecting copy all and then paste into your documents picture folder. It will work like save but I don't know if is will work in all cases.

You could possible also be able to dig them out via your Internet cache (Temporary Internet files).
Try opening the folder and sorting after either size or date.
I've dug many flash movies out of the cache that I couldn't right-click save.

If it is a stream (like trailers often are) you can't save it - it is done intentionally so that the site can make sure you do not get a copy of the file.

There are ways around this, but I'm not quite sure about their legality so I would recommend google as the answerer to any questions regarding the saving of streams


edit: it might be the case that it's not a stream, but it leads you to a redirect link which then downloads the file on your computer (in a temporary directory) then opens them in quicktime/WMP. If that's the case the file should be in your Temporary Internet Files folder (c:\windows\temp\Temporary Internet Files for IE under windowsXP (for windows NT replace windows with winNT) or C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles for Firefox under winXP). If that is the case, when you do a search for the file on all your hard-drives, hidden directories included, you should be able to dig it up. If you don't know what the file is called, do a search for *.mov or *.avi or *.mpg or whatever the format is.
