I have acquired from a friend a large CRT monitor (22" +) I think which refuses to kick into lower res to connect to my computer.

I think it needs about 2000 x 1400 to run right - i have had it working as the secondary monitor on my lap top.

but on my main computer i cannot select a high enough res on my old monitor to kick it over onto the new one.

My only thought would be to connect a better monitor from one of my friends, up the res, transfer onto the large crt and then hopefully i can driver it up or something.

Are you saying that the "large" monitor can't start up if you connect it to your computer, if it is running at a lower resolution?

Ok, the problem is the large monitor refuses to work at lower resolutions. My older monitor only goes up to 1024 x 768, however, if i connect the larger monitor to it then it switches to standby and does nothing. However, if i try higher resolutions (like using it as the secondary monitor for the laptop) then it will kick in as i can see the resolution selection screen.

I think if i can set the resolution higher i should be able to see it.

And you can't set your graphic card to a higher resolution with your current monitor, then?

Or you can't set it to higher resolution at all? Not even if you turn down the color debth?

Large Monitor

You need the drivers for the large monitor. Whatever the brand is logon to their web site and download drivers for it. The driver tells the video what levels to run the monitor for a specific resolution. Its the combination of video and monitor that sets the video capibility. You can't change monitor of such a size difference without changing the monitor driver. If its a plug-n-play monitor setup should have detected it and asked for a driver. Since you did not say p-n-p had a error then this is an older monitor and you need the driver.
