Backstabbing

I read in a previous thread somewhere a while back that thieves could backstab with any weapon that a pure thief could use? When I try to backstab with a spear or staff or long sword it never seems to work. If I use a short sword or a dagger I always get the backstab multiplier.
Can someone please confirm whether or not the dagger and short sword are the only weapons that you can backstab with? and do you literally always have to be behind them and attack their back for it to work?
Thanks

Well, I was using mostly katanas, long swords and bastard swords for backstabbing, as well as the staff of the ram (ToB) and it always worked for me. You HAVE TO attack their back in order to make it a backstab

Also, keep in mind that it's not just the weapon-type, but the weapon itself that must be usable by thieves. For example, even though a thief can use a staff, they can't backstab with a Staff of the Magi.

ok I've been trying it... I have the Flametongue sword... Long Sword I think... and I can get behind the enemies, usually using invisibility or improved invisibility (because Jan's Hide in Shadows sucks) and attack their backs but it usually just goes as a normal attack and I dont get the multiplier... what am I doing wrong??
Thanks

I think you have to be stealthy, not just invisible

Is it possible that your just missing? Cause if you don't hit them when your still invisible it won't work. Well actually it's more like your still invisible and as soon as you hit them you appear.
It's also possible that the creature your trying to backstab is immune.
And finally it's also possible your a Swashbuckler, who can't backstab.

but can you do it being invisible or do you have to hit your stealth roll?
I'm trying to use Jan and he is just a plain thief.

Backstab
Invisible, mislead, or hide in shadows all work.
You must be behind your target, using a thief-usable weapon, fairly much touching their circle, and they must be susceptible to backstab - creatures with innate see invisible (Liches, Dragons, TorGal, etc.) , beholders, golems, etc. are immune. Finally, you have to make the to hit roll
Turning on to-hit rolls can let you know if you're missing. Things which prevent backstabs (non-thief weapons, immune creatures, etc.) will produce a "Weapon insuitable for backstab" or "The backstab seems to have failed" message.

I dont get either of those messages, I just get "Jan attacks whoever" followed by "Jan does 6 (or whatever) points of damage..."

Hmmm did you turn those attack rolls on?
All i can think of is that you are doing everything right, but missing the first attempt ( to hit roll) and thus breaking your invisibility with a miss. Then when you do hit ( Jan scores 6 points of damage whatever) you are visible and thus no multiplier.
Flametongue: there is something strange about this weapon, but I cant remember what it is! Perhaps it is just the oddities of this particular sword which is preventing you in this case. Give him a sanchodoku or something.

Just try with any Short Swords...

Turn the feedback on higher if you haven't already and see if your getting a backstab multiplier, if not your doing it wrong somehow?

Flametongue
I think flametongue is the sword that should do damage vs trolls, but doesn't... It should work fine for backstabbing...
