Dad's Computer doesn't turn on

Well the other day my dad was complaing that his computer just randomly shut off on him while he was doing some stuff online, and that It wouldn't turn on. I got it to turn on and started cleaning up his computer, since he has no idea what he's doing and has a bunch of crap bogging it down(the thing's at least 8 years old so it doesn't need any selfinstalling software on there helping it go any slower). I decided I format the hard drive and do a clean install of win 2k, so I popped in my Partition Commander CD(since windows won't let you install an older OS while you're running a newer one, damn them) restarted and nothing. The thing has yet to turn on for me, but from time to time it does make a noise like it wants to turn on. It's frustrating like when you're car dies and the engine just won't turn over. Anything I can do aside from junk it. It's an old Compaq Presario PII.

I would try opening it up and taking it completely apart and then putting it back together. It sounds kinda retarded but it does help sometimes.

I thought about taking it apart and making sure all the connections are good, but I haven't had the time yet. Maybe thursday.

It could be that the motherboard is fried... I used to have that exact computer and the motherboard fried on me twice.

I hope not, but we'll see. We had a few problems with it when we first got it, and then nothing until recently when it just started to get all the invader software that eats your processor speed and ram. Well if, after I check it out it still don't work, we'll scrap it.

Thanks for that highly informative tidbit @ss. Did anyone ever tell you're superb at this tech support thing? And it won't suck to be me. My dad will just have to limit his computer usage to when he's at work, and he rarely uses the computer at home anyway. I'd just like to figure out why it's not working and fix it, so he can use it at home if he wants to.
