Pickpocketing illithium: impossible

A week ago, KN expressed an interesting idea of both completing the Sarles quest and obtaining the Mace of Disruption +2: give Sarles the illithium then pickpocket it from him.
I tried the idea and found out that it is impossible to pickpocket the illithium back from Sarles. You can get a few gold coins form Sarles, that's all. Moreover, the illithium isn't stored anywhere in the Jystev estate. Giving the illithium to Sarles equals losing it.
It is a bit strange. I would understand if the mace were an evil tool: an evil party could be supposed to fail quests intentionally. But the mace isn't evil. It is an important piece of equipment against vampires and other level-draining creatures. Why a good party must fail a quest is a mystery.

Without spoiling - I'll just say that not giving Salas the Illitium(sp?) isen't the same as failing the quest.

I've actually never tried to give Salas the real Illitium

Not exactly. You're right, it can't be pickpocketed, but you can kill Sarles and you'll find it on his corpse. You'll take a hard rep hit, and if you don't get out fast, you'll lose even more from the Jystevs. Not too viable for a good party, but it can be done Image

I guess you can kill him, but I would HIGHLY not recommend doing that.Just give him the fake illithium.

You get more exp for this quest if you give out the real one, I think 20000, but frankly, I'd much rather have the upgrade on the Mace of Disruption.

Besides, I wouldn't exactly call the fake alloy solution to be "losing" the quest.

Frankly, I prefered the response you get with the fake alloy. Sarles was an idiot, so I got a kick out of pissing him off, and the response of the temple folk to the alloy actually seemed more appropriate. Then of course there's the mace. To be perfectly honest, I think the fake alloy solution was actually supposed to be the "winner" here. A pretty good quest all around, if you ask me.
