Elementals

I have found that Earth elementals are the most useful to me..especially hasted because of the massive damage they inflict. Does anyone feel the Fire or Air have some benefits i dont know about?

Fire Elementals are immune to a lot of types of damage.

Fire elemtals hit like +4 weapons.
Don't know if this applies to the other kind

All elementals hit at +4 and are immune to weapons of +1 or lower. I was asking more for something unique eg earch elementals avg damage is like 35..fire and air is like 17...so is there something additional like does the extra fire dmg from the fire elemental hit through stoneskin on enemy mages....

In all my experience, not much so this isn't written in stone, fire elementals seem to last longer than earth and water elementals do. When ever Edwin casts a fire elemental it's always around long after the others were destoyed, but it could just have been luck.

Air elementals are v good against the red dragon. Doing lots of damage i think because
he's a fire dragon the big air elemental from the staff of air once
did 50 points of damage to him.But i've never used the earth elementals yet i'll have to try some. yours rowdin.

Earth elemental is the best. Though I think the spell is buggy. The other one usually brigs up a "smaller" elemental (12 HD?), but the earth elemental is always "big", hits harder and has more HP.
It has one drawback though: multiple elements hardly reach the same target, and you will have problem in narrow passages Image

hmm..i've never had the need for more than one earth elemental at a time...add a couple skeletal warriors and a wizard eye and you can scout ahead and beat up everyone in your path.

(tip) always save before summoning elementals in case you fail your test of wills with them.

Carry along the ring of earth control if you intend to summon earth elementals.

You can also summon a skeleton before, and then an earth elemental. Turn invisible with the staff of the magi while you concentrate on the elemental. If it turns hostile, you skeleton will kill it as the elemental would not know what to do since it can't see it's summoner... Image

Since you guys were talking about elementals, I was just wondering, why is there no water elementals? Doesn't that seem pretty obvious to have a water elemental if you have a fire one?

Water Elementals are something that I've always wondered about too. Who knows, perhaps they may add them in the expansion. Although that I doubt. We'll be too busy fighting the other children of bhall to worry about elementals.

@Genesis: Yes, fire elementals also add fire damage (usually 10-20 from what I've seen) and it does go through stoneskin's so fire elementals are good for mage attacks. You'll notice that a good air elemental is worth 7000Xp whereas a Earth elemental is only worth 6000Xp. (from underdark portals). I generally use the air elemental since it's more accessible (staff, cleric spell and mage spell).

Thanks for the responses. I think I like my earth elementals the most. They just plain look cool next to my little elven sorcerer chick.

Someone wanted to know how to prevent them from going hostile...if you are using earth elementals carry around the ring of earth elemental control that you get at nalia's keep. Also since there is a 15% chance of them going hostile always save or quicksave before summoning any elementals that way if they go hostile, just reload and try again. Pat also put in a third strategy for dealing with this however...I prefer theses two cause you dont loose the spell this way.

Isn't there a ring of fire control too?

And doesn't the length of their service depend on the summoners level?

If you have the proper staff and lose control of an elemental you can just bash it and it will die. There is a ring and staff for each kind of elemental, but I never used Elementals much from my mages (as opposed to Druids). Stunning myself for 5 rounds to summon something that might attack me doesn't sound like a good idea...but given the power of the elementals I guess it's worth it if you're careful.

There are no water elementals because there are few rooms you can summon them in. You need a source of the element to summon. Air and Earth are easy and I guess your mage can use a torch or something for fire but doesn't have large enough buckets of water :P

Sometimes a little danger is good...plus earth elementals are stronger than the druids fire elementals...cause they hit each other at exactly the same time earth doe 35avg pts to fire...fire does 15avg to earth...you can see how this will end (i actually tried this one)

maybe i'll have to look into elementals again. I had some bad experiences with elementals in my first game (summoning them was fine, but they would easily get confused/dominated and attack me) so i havn't used 'em since.

Yes, summoning of elementals is a bit long (3? round), so it cannot be used effectively in the thick of battles.

But there are many places where you can prepare for the battle in advance. If the enemy has no special weapons or spellcasters (domination) one elemental can easily deal with them. If there are spellcasters you should go forward with the correct magic defenses (or send some lower minions). This way the elemental could help in subsequent battles in dungeons (If the passage allows him to advance. Image

Below level 15 (no Skeleton Warrior) the elemental is the only choice to have some long living helpers. For sorcerers: the summoning spell is even more important than the Tenser's transformation (have to be chosen earlier).

I think the main advantage (If i remember my ad&d monster manual) of fire elementals was immunity to fire (I guess they would do fire damage too), earth elementals had raw damage, and air elementals were invisible.
