Desktop folders forget

For some reason, my desktop folders when opened won't retain the "memory" of the view they had, before. For a few minutes, a few hours, perhaps, but then they forget. They open to a default large size, and the thumbnail view. I want certain folders to have the list view, and display as relatively small boxes. Any suggestions for how to get this feature back? Thanks.

If this is XP (and possible Win2K)?

Then the only thing I can think of at the moment is to make sure you have the "remember each folder setting" checked.
(names are roughly translated from my danish version of XP, so they are likely called something else in the english version).

In the control panel, there is a folder settings option. The middle pane should be called "Show" or "View" or something similar. And at the bottom there is a long list of options that can be checked or unchecked. One of these options is to remember the folders settings for each individual folder. (second from the top in the list, in my version).
This option is the only thing I can think of, at the moment.

However, Windows is really bad at remembering many types of settings. (I personally often have problems with the windows size of IE, which Windows keeps forgetting  )

Yeah, it's XP, and you mean the folder's tool/folder dialog box, not the Control Panel. ;) I became familiar with that a few months ago, after first getting XP. Set it correctly then, and it's not helping, alas, now. Thanks for trying, though.

No actually. I did mean the control panel.(I know it is called control panel in english :p :D )
I have something (roughly translated) called Foldersettings in my control panel.
But it is the same dialog as you get from for instance, "foldersettings" via the file explorer.

But as I said - Windows has a tendency to forget settings every now and again, personally - I have no problems with fileviews, because I want most all my folders to have the "list" view.
I can't even find where these folder-values are stored (if they are stored in the registry, they are hidden a little more then usual). There must be some variables somewhere telling Windows the look for each folder, but I'm not even sure they would help the matter much :(

Yes, you're right: there is a folder settings folder in the Control Panel. It does mirror the other, however. :)

My problem is that this happens every few hours. With Win98, on the other hand, it happened only after my registry got corrupted after roughly 18 months' use. I've been using XP for a couple of months. This doesn't make me too happy.
