Explorer won't explore - Help?

Have any of you computer gurus ever had your Windows Explorer suddenly stop working? I mean, it just suddenly wouldn't load one day. We get an error (XP wants to send an error report), and that's it! My wife, who's no chump when it comes to computers, tried everything she could, trying to track down the problem, but no good. We finally thought that we would just uninstall Explorer, then re-install. Well, surprise, surprise, you can't uninstall it! Now we understand the M$ monopoly problem! So, we had no choice and downloaded Netscape Navigator 7 as a last resort! Ha ha on Micro$oft!

Still, its irritating. I think the initial problem started when someone typed in a slightly wrong web address, and we got one of those default search engine programs that forcibly changes your default home web site. I hate those things. Anyway, I think something there corrupted Explorer. No viruses on our computer, we run a fully updated Norton.

One problem we now have is that my wife can’t activate a reader program for downloaded novels for her Pocket PC. The program activation requires Explorer, and won’t work with Netscape Navigator.

Any advice would be much appreciated. ;)

I wouldn't mess with trying to repair IE or getting it fixed; I'd go straight to the OS reinstall. But then again, I do that every six months whether I need it or not.

I don't think it would be neacesary to re-install the OS simply to reinstall IE, but that depends somewhat on what the error message says (which we don't know).

And it should clearly be possible to remove IE from your computer, by going into control panel -> Add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components.
