NWN: Can't Complete Tomes Quest - Please Help

Hi all - new to the forum. I've been lurking for a while and want to thank you all for answering so many of my questions.

Here's one for which I haven't been able to find an answer - here or anywhere. I hope one of you can assist me.

I'm almost ready to begin ch 2.2 and have been finishing up some last minute quests. The last of these was Eltoora's Tomes Quest. I'd been carrying around the Tome of Death for a few days and finally brought it to her now that I'm ready to move on.

The dialoge goes as expected - she accepts the tome and it disappears from my inventory, but this does not trigger the end of the quest and I do not get any experience.

The quest remains open and if I speak to her again (either a new dialogue or a continuation of the first one) she responds as though I still owe her a book.

I have a save directly before speaking to her and one directly after. My journal says 4 tomes have been returned in both saves. What I mean is, the journal says four tomes have been turned in before I give her the Tome of Death and it says the same thing after I give it to her. I've tried several times and had no success.

Before you ask, yes, I am very positive that I've returned all the tomes.

Has anyone had this happen? If not, can anyone more clever than I (heh, everybody) think of a work around so I can finish the quest? My rogue isn't really all that concerned with item creation (she'd rather leave that to the mages anyway) but she does mind missing out on the reward and exp. And I'd really hate to move on and leave a quest unfinished.

I truly appreciate your help, both in the past and, I hope, in the future.

There are a few things you could try.

Firstly - have you patched your game fully? It might have been a bug in earlier versions of NwN, so patching is always a good idea. The current patch is version 1.62, and I'd advice you to do this before trying much else.
If you have a save game from before you hand in the last one, then patch and run that game, and see if the problem persists.



Secondly, after you have patched and this problem persists, - it is possible to spawn items into the game. If you are 100% sure (or 110) that you have handed in all the tomes, you could try to spawn in the tomes again, to see what tome(s) Eltoora still wants.
The way to spawn in items is to use the dm/console commands.

The easiet way to do this is to type in your chat-box (the small box labled "Talk:" just above your quickslots.)

Type:
##DebugMode 1 (note the ##, and this is case sensitive, so capital D and M).
next type:
##dm_spawnitem <itemtag>
the itemtags for the tomes should be (I've only tested one of them, so let me know if some are wrong, and I'll find them again, or you can do it yourself, if you wish, via the toolset, and chapter 2 module).

You can read from the tagname which tome it is (deat, fire, ice etc).
The spawncommand spawns in the item where your mousecursor is located, so be carefull not to place the mouse outside the gamearea or inside a wall

after you have spawned in with the dm_spawnitem the tomes you whish, exit the debugmode by typing
##DebugMode 0 (again - case sensitive command).

Then you should have the tomes you whished again, and you can try handing them in again and seeing if this triggers the end of the quest.
If it dosen't (and you have patched), then I'm affraid I can't really help you more.
But try patching first (if you haven't).

In answer to your question, yes, I have patched (some time ago) to 1.62.

Also, I'm very sure that I've gotten all the tomes.

Since I've posted I've been going back (don't want to move on) and exploring all the areas where the other tomes should be, just to make sure. No luck. Everything is dead and the only things left around are non-magical bolts, arrows and bullets.

I'm certain I didn't disgard anything important as I make it a rule to disgard unwanted things only in the temple. I've dumped any things I can't carry, don't need or can't sell (such as recovered traps) and I'm surprised I haven't been fined by the cleric for littering!

I've gone back and looked through all that stuff just in case. Wow - that's a lot of fairy dust and slaad tongues. Anyway, am pretty certain that accidental loss isn't the problem as the journal says four books have been returned both before and after I give Eltoora the fifth book. Strange, no?

I will try your suggestion directly. I did not know there was a way to do that, but that's because I have avoided reading that sort of thing. Early in games I've very temped to "buff up" and there's no quicker way to spoil the fun. But it's great knowledge to have to fix a legit problem.

Thanks again - but I still seem to be having some trouble.

I tried getting the tomes with your solution and was able to get three - tomes of Fire, Ice and Life. So far it just doesn't work with the Tomes of Death or Resonance. I've tried multiple times and checked my typing and my cursor is in the clear - still no luck. It says "Success" but nothing appears.

Also, probably I'm just dense and missunderstanding - are you saying I am supposed to type in "##" in front of "DebugMode 1"? When I do that I get a "Not found" message. So I got the first three tomes by omitting those ## characters. Now I've tried it both ways on both remaining books with no success.

Guess I'll try going back to Eltoora and giving her the three books I have (she's really getting her money's worth isn't she?) and see what happens.

More weirdness - but success!

Okay, this doesn't make any sense to me either, but here goes -

After respawning theTomes of Life, Fire and Ice (and unable to respawn Death and Resonance) I went back to Eltoora to see what would happen. Bear in mind I still had the original Tome of Death in my inventory because I used a save from before giving it to her.

So I had four tomes (Life, Death, Fire and Ice) in my inventory when I spoke to her. Three of them (Life, Fire and Ice) I had already turned in and gotten rewards for.

So I spoke to her and said I had a tome for her. When I clicked that dialogue option I got the choice to give her the Tome of Fire or the Tome of Death. No options for the other tomes I was carrying. I clicked on "Death" and she took it and I was granted exp and the quest ended.

I am thrilled to have fixed this problem but I am thoroughly confused as to what happened. I ALWAYS had the Tome of Death in my pack (it never respawned) ad I'd given it to her at least four times with it completing the quest.

Okay, I am confused and I have some books I don't need but the quest is completed and I thank you so much for helping me!

I'll be fascinated to see if anyone else has had similar experiences.

This is strange indeed, because the Tome of Death was the one I tested out, and spawned into my own game

As for the DebugMode 1 - then all console/dm commands typed in the chat-box should be prefaced with ##. Otherwise - the game simply "thinks" it is something you want to say in-game. (for instance, talking in multiplayer)

However ... there is another way of typing in these commands, and that is using the console command propmt (in the manual mentioned as being activated by ~), which appears in the upper left corner of the screen.
Typing here dosen't requiere the ##.
If you have somehow managed to get DebugMode 1 activated without the ## in the chatbox ... well - then that is wierd, and I don't know how that could happen
But I suspect you have typed using the command prompt, in the upper left corner? and not the chat-box.

(I just re-tested Tome of Death, and had no problems spawning it in using the mentioned tag??)

Well - at least it worked (sort of ), so now you can just drop the remainding tomes you have and move on with your adventure

You're quite right - I was using the tilde to enter the commands - didn't even know you could enter anything but "chat" in the talk box and since I never play Multiplayer I never use it. Hehe, dumb me.

I have indeed moved on and am currently enacting moderately heroic deeds in Luskan. LOL.

I'm curious about my difficulties, but not curious enough to try and reproduce the problem. I'm just happy it worked out without my having to leave a quest unfinished.

Just for scientific purposes (honest!) I tried turning in the tome of fire after the quest was complete (fire was the only one that the dialogue acknowledged that I had) and it worked and I got the extra exp for it, even though the quest was complete. My Rogue Chriah says to tell you she gave the exp and gold back immediately but I wouldn't believe her if I were you. ;-)
