HELP! JPEG turns into BMP

While building a website,?@I came across this problem. I downloded some of pictures (free, legal material: no nakedness or drooling involved), which were JPEG or GIF files, but some of them turned into bitmap files. When I tried again (right click and save as option), I found there's only saving in bmp option available. I can't use bmp for my webpage background. Why can't I download them in JPEG or GIF as they originally are?

Any advice welcomed. Thanks in advance.

off the top of my head, I'm thinking you can rename the files (whatever.bmp to whatever.jpg [.jpeg,.gif]. Otherwise, can't say I'm too knowledgable in such image formats. Seems strange a .jpg d'loaded from the web would only save in a .bmp format.

Have you tried right-clicking on the originals to see if you have an option for saving in JPG format? If not, whatever pic app you have may include no assocations for JPEGs.

Hello, guys. :) Thanks for the quick reply.

there's no option other than bmp available when I saved those pictures. It is strange because I could download and save in JPEG/GIF before from any sites available.

I found I could change bmp pictures into jpeg by opening them with Paint, and save them separately. I don't know if changing .bmp into .jpg is enough. So, now I can work on these pictures,?@though it is rather annoying to go through that process each time I download pictures.

Xandax, I tried them, and it didn't work this time (I thought that would solve the problem). However, I finally found the solution in Google search (where else?): Delete all the temporary internet files. Apparently, when the cache is full, the IE saves jpeg files bmp. Kind of irony because jpeg images are usually a lot smaller than the same images in bmp format.

Thanks everyone for the help. :)

Well - actually deleting the temp. internet files is also what it says in the link :p :D
It's step 2 out of the 3 (well ... 4, but the 4th dosen't count) listed
