I have NWN Gold (NWN & SoU ). I have a Monk. I would like to get the Whirlwind feat. I see (HotU) next to this feat. Does this mean I have to buy (Hordes of the Underdark to get this feat? I may take me a year just to finish NWN with one character.

Any feat with HotU next to it requires that expansion to make use of it, so, yes. You'll need HotU to make use of any feats and classes specific to the game.
