My friend recently bought a Linsys 10/100 Mbps Ethernet card, but when I installed the card for him, the boot-up message says that there's a resource conflict. So I tried to install the card in different PCI slots, but I still get the same message. His computer is a Celeron 600 Mhz with 192 megs of RAM. He bought his computer from HP, and he lost his manual, so I have no idea what motherboard he's using (i think it's one of those generic OEM ones). Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Firstly - what OS is he running?

Try finding out what ressources are used and what devices are on each ressource.
Then you can see if you can manual alter the interrupts for the devices that are conflicting.

Does his mobo have an onboard NIC? If it does, you may have to disable that first before installing the PCI card.

My friend runs Windows XP Professional on his computer. But the thing is, he took out his dialup modem before he installed the ethernet card, and he installed it in a different PCI slot, so I have no idea why there's a resource conflict.

He doesn't have an onboard NIC, so that's not the problem.

Well - the interrupt assigned to the NIC card may be the same as assigned to another "important" device.

You should always keep as much away from the interrupts used by the graphics card and the sound card in my experience.

If you go through the menu/button "System" in the Control Panel and take a look at the hardware mangenment / Device mangenment (don't know its english word - am running danish version - the one where you can see all the hardware in the computer)

And select the menu just before "Help" (named Show/List or something - again, working with danish version here).
There should be a menu item nammed something like "Ressources after install" (bah - need an english version just to make sence here ).

A new display three will appear, and there you can select IRQ.
That view will give you an overview over what interrupts/IRQs that have been used and which devices that are using it.

Can you, by the way, alter the assigned IRQ of the device in the properties of the NIC, via hardware mangenment / device mangenment (same display as I mentioned before - via System in Control Panel), becuase if you can then try to assign it to another IRQ manually.

Don't worry about the language difference, because I know enough about Windows to figure out what you mean. I'll try to see if the ethernet is taking up an IRQ range that's been assigned to something else, and hopefully I can change it.
