This may be a weird question, but is it possible to use a medpack on another character (so that you use it, but the other character get's healed?) and if so, how?

As far as my experiences go, you need can't do that; you need to shift focus to the character you want to heal. It feels a little clumsy, despite the TAB key shortcut.

Please correct me if I'm wrong -- I too would like to know if there is another way...

Yep, Kait's right. The focus is always the character whom you're searching under. It's the drawback of having a unified inventory system. (Otherwise, I rather like it--though I wish they'd added an alphabetical and value inventory sort.)
