Jedi Classes?

I have just recently bought this game for the pc and i'm enjoying every moment of it. I just have a question about the jedi advancement: do we get to choose which type of jedi classes we advance to or is this done automatically depending on your starting class? For example, if you started the game as a scout, can you choose a Jedi Guardian as your jedi class?

One of the Ancient Fah...excuse me, Jedi Masters, suggests an appropriate Jedi class based on a series of answers you provide. (I suspect this is hommage a Ultima.) But even after he's made his suggestion, you can override it. I did, without penalties.

So based on your (or anyone's) opinion...what's the best combo to strive for in this game?
I was going to build a 5/15-Scout/Jedi Guardian, wields 2 lightsabers (or better yet, use two bladed lightsabers) with feats like 2 weapons fighting and flurry. The biggest reason why i prefer Scout instead of soldier is because you get more skill points when you level up, which i'm gonna spend on skills like computer use and repair, also you get free feats like implants, uncanny dodge, and 1st level flurry. Armors are useless once you became a jedi since there is too much restriction, so i plan to invest heavily on Dexterity and Strength. Plus, although the scout's attack bonus can't compete with that of the soldier's, the higher saving throw bonus can compensate for that. On the down side, you only lose 1 feat (lvl 4) if you choose the soldier/jedi guardian instead.

There is no "best" combo, though some things work better than others. Ideally, to make the best use of all the class advantages, you go with this:
Scout-Scoundrel/Consular
Soldier/Guardian
Sentinels are basically for people who can't make up their mind... thus don't really give strengths. Or weaknesses.

No best, as he says. Just as in BG2, the various combinations of character PCs and party NPCs are all winnable; some are just easier than others. IMO, the Soldier/Guardian is easier to start, more difficult later. I prefer the Sentinel, because you can build your PC and take any battle in any number of directions, depending upon who is accompanying you and what you face. But each to their own.

Don't overlook the Scoundrel / Counselor. Sure hit points may not be that great, but you're a skill monger and a fountain of force juice!
Seriously, I was throwing force powers around like crazy and with the stun lines (light side) I didn't have to worry about my feeble health: they were frozen! Then I just waltzed up and hacked 'em... which, I might add, is very easy to do with a Scoundrel's Critical Hit ability (which works against stunned foes from any direction, not just from the back)....
