Good Starting Character

So I bought the game quite a while ago, but got disinterested fast probably because I was splitting up point way too much and I had yet to finish BG2. So I'm wondering if anyone's got any suggestions for a first time player. RIght now I have a Dwarf with some point in Herbology, Smithy, Gunsmithy, Dodge, Melee, all the tech points Dwarves come with plus an extra one in Firearms I think. I'm just leaving the Shrouded Hills right now, so restarting won't be a problem at all. I've actually already done it a few times. To give anyone an idea what I want, I wanna be the dwarf on the cover basically. I'm not really expecting a reply since this is the first post in here in over a month, but it'd be nice.

Fwiw, I suggest a mage. You won't have to worry about picking up everything you find (at least, not until you take on a technologist party member). Study the Necromantic school and get the Harm spell. It deals out a lot of damage. Some people think it's unbalancing, but I suspect it was put in to provide the beginning magic user with the means of survival in a land where a lot of folks carry big, fat clubs. ;)

Go for a half-ogre that was raised in a circus, then boost INT and WIS. Have him become a melee fighter. He gets surprisingly powerful (Buy an axe off the beginning and see what I mean ;) )
