skills question

Just picked up NWN again after having put it down for several months. Finally finishing the campaign, and have picked up SoU.

Anyway, in looking at the new classes, I wanted to make a fighter and convert him to a 'blackguard' or whatever the class is called. One of the requirements states that the hide skill must have 5 or 6 points. When I created the character, I spent 4 points getting the hide to 2, as hide is not a class skill for a fighter. Now that he is level 2, with my additional skill points, I can't seem to add any more points to hide. Can't recall his dex but it is at least 12. Not really sure what is preventing me from raising this skill. Any ideas? thanks.

If the reason is stated plainly in the half-arse NWN manual (that's a different thread), than I just missed it because I was paging through it last night.

There is a restriction on the number of points you can put into a non-class skill.
I belive it to be the cross-class skills mentioned on page 72 of the NwN manual.

you can have
(class level +3) / 2
skill ranks of such a skill - thus at level 2 you would be able to have:
5/2 = 2.5 = 2 (I would think it is rounded down, because otherwise you could place 1 more rank in it)

at level 3 it would be: 6/2 = 3.

To get your skill rank of 5 you have to have class level: 7
(7+3)/2 = 5

Thanks Xandax, indeed, I missed it.

That being the case though, it seems pretty useless for a fighter type class to become a blackguard. If you have to wait until level 7 to make the class transition, the abilities you'd continue to gain as a blackguard have little use.

Say for instance, this path is followed. Switch to blackguard at level 7. Attain level 7 in blackguard (total level 14) to gain the ability to cast contagion. What good is that? I suppose the argument could be made that some special abilities are better than none at all, but when they will go unused, what's the point.

I suppose a lot of fun could still be had from a role playing perspective. On a PVP server you hang out by the bridge crossing a river and whenever any PC's come along you can belt out, "NONE SHALL PASS. I MOVE FOR NO MAN!"

Maybe I'll start another thread disucssing the prestige classes. I'm kinda surprised this forum is so dead. Perhaps everyone is just playing SoU. I've got it but don't expect to get to it until later in the summer.
