Raise undead question?

Hi all,

I was thinking of playing this game through as a cleric - I really like the raise dead spells as you have a protector for about 24hrs which is usefull and is not going to disappear halfway through a fight! However, I noticed that one of the descriptors says that it is an 'evil' spell. So here is probably a dumb question - do I have to be of evil alignment to cast it (I normally play good characters - dont like evil).

Thanks for your time,

Recoba

Hey Rec, I'm a little confused mate. Raise Undead is a spell used to return a friendly player to life, you target one corpse, and positive energy makes that player alive again. It's Necromantic, but it's not evil.

Do you mean Create Undead? If you do, I suppose it can be considered evil, but I'm sure I've seen Good characters Create Undead before. Why don't you try it and see if you can? It's a 6th Level spell...

LOL, don't worry. I was scratching my head about it as well, that is up until I finished Penultima last night! Woohoo! Awesome module series. :)

I think I have the answer now though, I got it wrong. Raise Dead is NOT Necromantic, it's of the Healing domain. So, as far as I can tell, Animate Dead is something you could cast. I think. I might need to find out and try, but I'm tentatively going for the fact that to cast Animate Dead you don't need to be evil, as it's part of the Death Domain, not the Evil Domain...

Well that was... interesting. I've found that you can cast Animate Dead, even if you have a Neutral Good Cleric. Go figure!? :D

thanks

@Nippy

Thanks for the info - I am planning on being a cleric for our multiplayer nwn (see other related thread) ,no-one else wants to be it and we will probably need one!

Any ideas on some good stats - high wis is a must - but I am also thinking of having int 13 so I can get more skill points, reasonable cons (15-16) so I dont die when a bee gets too close and an ok strength (14-15). Not worried about dex as I am going to carry a shield and a one handed weapon (flail?) and sling switchable combo. Cha is also not a prob.

Any feedback = :)

Cheers

Well, a Cleric isn't my normal playing class, but I think the recommended stats that Bioware give you are OK:
  • Strength: 14
  • Dexterity: 8
  • Constitution: 14
  • Wisdom :16
  • Intelligence: 10
  • Charisma: 14
Remember though, that Strength might not be that critical an option, depending on the domains you choose, and also if you either have Bulls Strength spells or potions, so I'd probably go 12 for that, not to high, and you can always use spells to up it.

Like you said, Dexterity you're not too worried about.

Constition is good at 14, I'd be happy with that.

Wisdom, is not really that much of a problem, as the level up options you get will allow you to put more points in.

Intelligence, largely depends on what skills you want to use. My Paladin had an Intelligence of 10, but he only ever got 3 skill points a level up. Maybe 12 might suit you better.

Charisma, I assume you have a Paladin or Sorcerer in tow. ;)

Considering the info you've given then, I'd say this might suit you well:
  • Strength: 12
  • Dexterity: 8
  • Constitution: 14
  • Wisdom :16
  • Intelligence: 12
  • Charisma: 14
I'd keep Charisma at 14 as your Turn Undead ability is given a bonus by your Charisma.

thanx

@Nippy

Thanks for the info - I have not been a cleric b4 and as a result wanted to make sure I did not mess up my stats (like my first attempt at creating a two weapon fighting character with dex 11 mmmm took me to the start of chapter two to figure out he was useless.....)

Cheers
