Problem when installing high compessed data CD

First of all this is not a promo to a specific game but since Infogramers got high compressed data in their installation disc, I think I'll ask the question here
I borrowed Civ3 disc from a friend, during installation procedure an error message pop usp saying a file which will be extracted got different CRC - it's possible the file is corrupted. There are 3 options : abort, retry & Ignore. abort will abort the installation process, ignore will ignore the prob and continue to next file while retry will stop working after several files was deteted got CRC error.
I tried the ignore button and the game will run but clicking some options will crash the game or quit the game unexpectely. I ask my friend and when he install it on his PC it went fine - no error occur
I also try my MOO3 and seems got some probs too during the last file - an error message pop up saying invalid application caused error.
It seems my PC got prob with installing high compressed data disk. I try to narrow the prob, the CDROM got no problem. which leave me to VIAHyperion 4 in 1 driver & mobo (ASUS TUV4X)onboard controller. What seems to cause this problem ?
PC Specs :
Win98SE
ASUS CDS520 CDROM
Maxtor 20GB & 40 GB ATA 133 7200 rpm
256 MB ram

If you can see what file it is - try installing and getting the failed file from your friend. Might do the trick.

The problem is it occur randomly. The files which is said to have different CRC are different every attemp I tried to install the CD.
Anyway I'm looking for more solid reply than the usual file copy solution

what happens if you try to copy the CD to your harddrive and installing from there?

Same problem

yet my firned PC which is P2-266 and 6.5G HDD can do it smoothly too. So I guess something wrong within my PC. FYI I tried to swap the CDROM with his to check my CDROM and same error occur.
I dunno if I can bring his CPU over and laplink the copied CD files to check for some more details, yet I'd rather not since he live a bit far from my place
<Edit> Here's the error message which I mention on my first post :
CRC error : The file : [installation path]\[filename] (i.e. : C:\Games\Civ3\abc.flc) doesn't match the file in the setup's.cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor. Abort, Retry, Ignore

Only other advice I've been able to dig up would be to try and update your OS with the patches provided by microsoft.
And/or trying to update all system drivers (might be a new VIA 4-in-1 out also)
Besides this - I am at a loss.
Other then trying with another CD, but seeing as you had problems with MOO also, I doubt that would do much good.

I have checked M$ site and found no update for Win98Se besides Security updates, Media Player 9, IE6 SP1 & DX9 using my online Windows update utility.
On Via Hyperion Driver :
I'm using ver4.34 which comes with mobo CD driver instalation
Newer version cause more error to pop up.
Older give almost same error with ver 4.34.
While letting Win98Se driver to hande IDE steering (uninstalling VIA driver) also got same result.
Other drivers :
Display driver : current up-to date one
Mobo BIOS ver 1005 (no update avalible)
<EDIT> Why do I get the feeling that HLD will show up later on and tell me to ditch this ASUS mobo ?

I encountered exactly the same CRC error problem when I tried to install SoA. Turning the DMA off the CD Rom drive (for the duration of the installation) sorted that problem for me. It is a slower installation though.

In response of Ysh DMA solution :
1. I turn off the Auto detect feat on BIOS and set the CDROM manually with only PIO4 mode enabled.
2. Uncheck DMA feat in Windows98 System Setting
Result :
Still got those annoying CRC error
Additional :
I tried minimise memory usage for CDROM from full into half, also same prob.

Cab files are essentially compressed files used for distribution with the MS installer system. If you're getting CRC errors in the files extracted from the CAB, then this may be a memory addressing error. Have you checked your memory modules are seated properly and have clean contact points? Try changing the memory modules (if you can) too.

Try deleting your Temp folder and create a new folder called Temp, sounds silly eh? Worked for me once or twice. I'll try to think of something better.

Out of interest, what OS does your friend use?

In response of Flibs reply :
Apparently the CAB file compression used by Infogrames is a bit different than standard M$ CAB file. Usually Winzip8.1 can open the CAB file and see files in it. Which if of coure if this work my problem already solved

(Winzip reported missing or corrupt header or something when you try to open this CAB file) As for memory leakage, BIOS report correct ammount fo memory, care to elaborate more how to check this problem ?
In reponse of Sleepy reply :
Another one thing about deleting Temp folder under Windows directory is system sometime will not uninstall other programs in your PC since Windows store some info in it. I'll check on the solution anyway
In response of Kammy reply :
Same with mine - Win98Se.
<EDIT> Just got a reply from a tech guy in other forum. He told me to disconnect one of my CDROM drive while installing the game. I haven't try it yet but it sounds weird.
