Gecko pelts (spoiler??)

Hello everyone--
I've finally gotten my hands on a copy of Fallout 2 and started to play (so I'm a newbie)... I was just wondering, though, if there's a way to skin the gecko pelts to sell in the trapping grounds of the first town; does it involve using a particular skill? Maybe you just have to kill all of them? I can't seem to be able to get any--could someone please explain?

Thanks for the info; unfortunately I've already killed most of he geckos... oh well, I guess..

Minor spoiler.

If Trapper Town (I think the name is - this is way back

) you will get a quest for a lost trapper from the women running the inn (where Sulik is located)

Rescue him and he will teach you to Skin Geckos. After that skinning them is simply as taking stuff from a dead.
