Shut down problem

For unknown reason, my computer (or, rather Windowsn 98se) refused to shut down.

Here's what happened: I shut down from Start menu, as you do, the screen went dark for a couple of seconds, and it came back again. I tried that a few times, then tried Restart option with the same result. Ctr+Alt+Del didn't show anything "no response" mark on, so I had to type them twice to restart.... in order to shut down!

It only happened a few times, and as far as I can tell, there's no common cause. It seems to happen at randam, and can be quite annoying, especially it was 12.30am and I wanted to go to bed!

Any help will be welcomed.

Thanks in advance. :)

Go to start --> Run, type in "msconfig" there should be a button called advanced on that first screen, click on that and you will be shown a bunch of check boxes, click on the one that says Disable Fast Shutdown.

If that option isn't there then I'll find the patch for you. All the patch does is disable fast shutdown.

Also you might want to turn off any exit sounds you might have.

But here are some link which you can get some answers :

PS : Should you find the docs a bit confusing, be patient a bit. M$ Tech support always like that  :D Just post more questions, hopefully some of us can shed some light ;)

The easiest thing to do is also try turning the sound for exit windows off. In control panel there is an icon called sounds, double click on that and scroll down the the appropriate one and select none.

Either that or follow Kid's links.

I have removed the exit sound. Hope the problem was solved. It only happens randomly when I really don't want it happen; ie. just before going to bed, leaving home for work, etc.

Thanks both for the advice. :)
