Iv was reading about the Monk and it sounds very appealing. He sounds like he's loads of fun and a kick a¤¤ fighter my only concern is since he is using no weapons will he get the -4 penalty against him for not having a weapon equipped?
it would also help if you could tell me a little about his advantages and disadvantages.
thanx

Good question, Garcia! It may have been covered here before. Did you do a search? I've never played a Monk, but you would think that hands that powerful would count as melee weapons. Plus, what good is the ever improving armor class if you have to take the penalty?

Just did a search for "monk penalty." TThis is the only topic that came up.

I did do some searching but I didn't come up with anything
there is another time were this comes up. when a mage uses melf's m.m. he doesn't have a weapon equiepped but still he doesn't get the -4 penalty perhaps because they act like a magical weapon equipped (they do when you attack they act like a +4 magical weapon)
there is nothing magical about the munk as fare as I could read. he gains AC as he raises in levels is that to make up for the penalty or for not being able to wear armour I have no idea.

To answer your question. No the monk gets not penalty for using fists in Melee. Infact he actually gets more of a bonus when using fists then when using weapons.
There are several reasons why monks kick A$$
1. they are very fast you end up with 4 attacks per round by exp cap.
2. massive damage you avg 25 pts of damage per hit at exp cap with the gauntlets of crushing you will avg 30 pts
3. you will have almost 90% magic resistance by exp cap, starting from level 14.
4. Monks are immune to almost all the bad stuff out there. disease, poison, slow, hold person
5. You can use priest scrolls, you can even user some mage scrolls
6. Stunning blow (about 5) per day by exp cap..good for taking out medium difficulty monsters.
7. Quivering palm 2 times per day at exp cap. Will take out even the toughest foes including dragons in one hit.
8. Out of this world save vs ...
9. Stealth and very very fast mover.
10. I could add more but you get the drift.
