In the underdark with the gnome village, I can't talk to the one guarding the door into the Balor, it says "Cannot initiate dialouge, Svirflbern appears busy" and it's been saying that with just about every person in the game (I couldn't speak with Firkragg in the beginning)

Do you have WinXP?
That's a known problem with that OS... i think installing the latest patch will fix it

The new official patch is ver 23037, and :
New in this version:
Fixes the NPC "X appears busy" bug associated with Win2K and WinXP.
FYI :
1. English Patch Version 23037 - 8.3 MB
2. European Patch Version 23037 - 6 MB (for users playing a German, French, Italian, or Spanish version of the game. Basically any non-English (UK or N. American) version of the game, with the exception of the Japanese and Korean versions.)
3. Japanese Patch Version 23037 - 12 MB (for users playing the Japanese version)
4. Italian TLK Update - 6.3 MB
The Japanese patch fixes :
Better contrast between enabled and disabled buttons on higher brightness settings.
Line wrapping on the biography and other screens now wraps correctly.
The F3 key now toggles between the hiragana and katakana alphabets.
When sending chat messages, users are no longer required to hit the F4 key to exit chat mode.
Fonts sizes on Store Screens are now smaller in order to accomodate all of the text.
The Backspace key now correctly deletes characters in multiplayer chat mode.
The text drop-shadow is now only displayed on floating and worldmap text, but is removed from text displayed on parchement.
Floating text now displays correctly in 3D and 2D.
Italian TLK Update :
This update is only intended for users playing an Italian version of the game. It replaces the current TLK tables with new ones that fix a number of text and dialogue errors found in the original version. The update is independent of any fixes made by a patch, so you can install it before or after the SoA patch - it doesn't matter.
All can be found
here
Hope that helps

This may sound slightly patronising, but it's not meant to be: Have you spoken with the svirfneblin pooh-bah and gotten the scroll to close the gate yet? I think you have to talk to the head gnome before the guy the door will speak to you.
