However now I am getting some problems. It is game related, Medieval Total War runs fine, Civ3 runs fine but things like Rallisport Challenge, Splinter Cell (demo) and Thief 2 will glitch for some reason.
The problem is probably directx8.1 related, after a while in a game I will get this strange lock up and the image will end up looking like I have been on too much wacky backy.
I have tired reinstalling DX and I have also tried applying a recent set of detonator drivers but still the problem persists, I think it might be over heating but my system temp is fairly stable and I don't have any overclocked devices.

Well have you tried downloading DirectX 9.0 Its available
here Hope that helps
The warning
The DirectX 9.0 runtime cannot be uninstalled. We recommend Windows Me and Windows XP users create a "System Restore" point before installing. seems rather ambivalent to be honest.

You hit the nail on the head with that one

I am not installing 9.0 until I have to!

What type of DX8.1 you got ? I throw out DX8.1b as soon as I got DX9.0 since I got 98SE as OS. As for your case I think you could try to down grade your DX8.1 and see what happens

Oooh good question, I shall have to check. I think that might be an issue, however a corrupt DirectX is what I am thinking at the moment. I will have to find one of those unsupported uninstall thingy's which come in so handy.

I think I have solved the problem, I installed a fix for XP which meant I could play GTA3, however this may well have caused the problem.
I also installed another version of DX I found lying on a game CD and I also uninstalled some VIA 4in1 drivers, it might well have been any of these problems.

"The wording on the box says "runs on Windows 98 or better". Why won't it run on Linux? I don't understand."

Well I never had 2000 in the first place and XP kind of fell in my lap.
