is it just bad luck that i cant find anything when i try to pick pocket someone or is it just not as usefull as it was in Baldurs Gate

Not as useful. Only other CRPG I've seen recently that truly encourages twitchy fingers is Divine Divinity, where you can select specific items to pickpocket.

Morrowind does that too.... selective pickpocketing
