Yesterday I saw the movie 'red dragon'. I thought it was quite good, although slightly disturbing (as it was meant to be). The thing I realized though was that the villian (not hannibal, mr. d)was just not good enough for me. Same with in the original silence of the lambs, in fact, i liked this villian much better than the guy in silence of the lambs, i also liked the hero better. The thing that dissapoints me in the villians is that they're insane, it just takes so much away from them. when you realise that what they're doing is just because they're sick it really takes away, even hannibal lector is pretty much insane, although he seems to have a handle on things more than the other two, i never saw hannibal so i can't really give an opinion on that. The only thing that makes the villian good is that you really have to feel sorry for him as he can't really make conscious decisions by himself. I would just rather have a vilian that wasn't mentally ill because i think it takes away. who knows.

I think part of Hannibals charm is that he is totally insane, twisted and savage and yet very polite. I like that part.

I havent seen red dragon yet, soon soon. I'll reply later.

Haven't seen "Red Dragon" yet, but very much enjoyed the original "Manhunter". Be interesting to compare the two.

No, he's a psyco!

And what exactly makes the circle evil?

I disagree with your premise. There are plenty of people who have abusive childhoods but don't wind up killing people. I don't feel sorry for Dolarhyde at all.

However, I did like his character in the book. Haven't seen the movie yet but in the book he actually wants to change. That moral struggle makes him much more interesting than the villain in SotL.

There was one scene with a tiger that I found very compelling. The original Manhunter didn't include it. I'm wondering if it made it into this movie?

Ya, the tiger scene is in Red Dragon, I really felt sorry for him, he did seem like he was gonna change. Oh well.

*slight spoiler*

one of the best scenes of the movie, in my opinion is where he finds the original painting by blake, and proceeds to eat it. the reason given in the movie for eating it was a good one - to protect the blind woman. however, a much better reason would have been - a massive increase in his own power.

just a random comment.
