Is this illegal? Exactly how illegal is it? If it is illegal how come so many people have this music on their computer? I've heard that it's only illegal if you sell it. Is this true? Does anybody actually have any facts/opinions on the subject?

The folks in the music business are greedy fascists trying to put down the little guy so they can keep paying their devas millions to pump out crap fests they call music. Don’t live in fear! Don’t give in to the man! Fight for your right to download! Fight, FIGHT, FIGHT!!!

P.S. Be sure to take note of my current disclaimer sig.

It is illegal to download music from file sharing programs like Napster (which I'm mentioning because it's closed). There are legal download sites including record labels which often put up one or two songs as a promotion or advertisement for the musicians they have signed.
This being said, any discussion of pirated music/software etc. is against the rules. I'm closing this thread.
