Beware the leader

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry
into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword.
It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind.
And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch
and the blood boils with hate
and the mind has closed,
the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry.
Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism,
will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so.
How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.

Julius Caesar

:) What have we learned? Keep the taxes low, citizens entertained, the
barbarians at the gates and the peasants in their place.

Satis est! ;)

Somehow, DW...

...such passages never really went out of style... ;)

History will prove that the "I am [Caesar*]." line can be replaced [*insert leader] and still be approrpriate...

...and sadly, there are still a number of them this very day.

Only an egotist like caesar would beleive that. Sometimes the world needs a caesar - look what he did for Rome.

Ultimately though, look where it got him - betrayed and murdered by the representatives of the people.

:D

Et tu, DW? Some of us with 40-year-old eyes find it is easier to just skip over posts written in dark gray-green on black, rather than read them. I am sharpening my daggar even as we speak.... :D

...that I know who he is referring to...

...I think that the color you are describing is teal? :p

...I see the dagger, Gwally...

...oh, my, you are not going to stab yourself at the back, are you? :p :D

EDIT- I think it's still too premature to conclude on anything, and I myself won't be surprised if Superman takes the position ;) ...

...with or without the dagger. :p

Talking about the old romans...

I really like the quote from mental_nomads sig :
"Veni, vidi, velcro"

(I came, I saw, I stuck around)
Nice variation on the original one there... ;) :D - strange but SYMbolicvally compelling....like Sleepy would put it ;) ...

No worries,
