Windows Update

I am trying to run Windows Update to get the latest security patch for Windows 98SE. It goes through the update and downloads whatever it needs to download but about half way through the installation part, it tells me to install the disk for Microsoft VM. I don't have a disk for Microsoft VM and it can't find some files it needs without it.

I have all of the Windows Update critical updates for 98SE and most of the recommended updates. I tried having it look at my 98SE CD, but it can't find the files there.

Does anyone know how I can get my hands on a MS VM disk?

Thanks in advance.

This is Java related, I think. Perhaps if you turned said java options on via MSIE, it would remedy itself? Java VM is usually turned on by default, however, due to a possible security leak or Internet hype, you turned it off.

Sorry I've got no definite answer off the top of my head. this is the best i could do. It would be a good time for flibble to show up.

Microsoft VM is installed as part of Internet Explorer. Your options are to either run the installation for your current version of IE and check that it's installed, or install the latest version of IE and make sure that component is selected as part of the installation/download. This used to be available as a seperate download directly from the Microsoft website, but they recently removed it in favour of using windows update, so you may find it in the recommended updates section too.

Well, I just installed the latest IE6 Service Pack 1, so I'm hoping that I can fix whatever it is in Windows that's not working. Do I need to dial back my security or privacy settings? I have the security set to medium and the privacy on medium-high.

Not sure. You may want to check it anyway.

It turns out that I had to download and install the IE6 SP1 update before the Windows Security Update would take effect.

Thanks, guys.
