In an effort to placate some of the GameBanshee members who don't like (American) football, I'm starting this thread to address any and all topics not related to football. I suggest that we start with sex and/or porn. If not that, we can bash Dubya, discuss the merits of our favourite bands or just sit around and drink.

Well, you have a point there, @Sleep. And we old frontline fighters in the grand revolution against order itself must stick together, if only to make sure we don't shiv one another in the back. Ah, those glorious days on the Parisian boulevards, deposing the King, drinking champagne from your girlfriend's slipper--it held two quarts--shooting off our rifles into the air as we sung to liberty in execrable French! That was the life!

I am currently reading "The Gods Will Have Blood" by Anatole France, it is certainly fascinating stuff, like how most all of the famous artists of the time were rendered to the same heights as the common pauper, making money where they could from little trinkets...i forsee this as a very good way to go, down with the aristocrats and their ensemble, just imagine some of the Britney's of my generation having to actually work for their money

Well, there is the alleged smilie I supposedly posted in frogus's thread a couple of weeks ago, but I've been around for a year and a half and still no smilies.

I'm not sure I can really explain it; I don't have a personal dislike for smilies, but I just never use them. I think it may go back to my training as an undergraduate in college. I think of writing as something more formal than conversation, even though in an environment like this, the text is actual conversation, not a report or formal prose. Still, old habits die hard.

When I write a paper or report, I write it all out, longhand, and in pencil (including the footnotes) exactly as I want it to appear. Then I read through the paper, edit and make changes, also on paper and in longhand, then I type it into my word processor. Then I print out a hard copy, read it out loud and make any necessary changes, for grammar, content and spelling. I do this a couple more times before turning it in.

I realise that a post here isn't a Master's Degree thesis, but I still do much of the same things when I post. I almost always use the "Preview Reply" button to see what I wrote and I almost always edit and change my posts (especially the long--regular length for me--ones) before submitting them to be attached to a thread, although I often find several spelling and grammar errors when I read through it later; the ones that really bug me I edit again.

Like I said, I don't know what it is, but I just don't like to abbreviate things or use shortcuts. That's why I almost never shorten someone's name and I always try to spell and punctuate their name as they do; I can't ever recall ever calling C Elegans "CE", for instance, and I don't think I've capitalised "fable" in quite some time. I think that Ned Flanders and Buck Satan are the only two people that I consistently shorten or abbreviate (Flanders because that's what Homer calls him on The Simpsons; I don't know about Buck).

You'll also notice that I almost never use expressions like IMO, ROFL or any other internet jargon; it's just against my very nature.

That's right, you're reading all that Anatole France, now. I'm glad you're enjoying it. France was a damn good satirist, with a fine eye for accurate historical detail and the "human touch." I just checked, and Project Gutenburg has several of his novels freely available for reading in English translations here.

As for the artists, the situation really hasn't improved that much in the modern US. I know of plenty of fine writers who are doing dull editorial work for major chains, painters working in graphics design, fine composers stuck doing studio backup for bubblegum bands and easy listening albums. The rule of lowest common denomniator not only defines taste, but the job market, too.

But emoticons provide an emotional syntax lacking from virtual communications, and defined (in reallife) by visual cues and verbal inflections. I never used to post emoticons, but sometimes my occasionally dry humor was misinterpreted for what I actually meant. A quick wink is better than kevlar is halting a bout of flame, and the heavy angst that often follows when matters are sorted out.
